Tempe is the eighth largest city in the state of Arizona – located in Maricopa County near Phoenix, and home to Arizona State University.
The history of Tempe starts with the Hohokam – Native Americans that built canals to support the agriculture in the area. In 1865, Fort McDowell was established about 25 miles away from downtown Tempe on the Salt River. Shortly after, new towns formed further down the river. Several military service members and Hispanic workers were hired to grow food and animal feed, and soon after that, small camps were set up near the river. This became the first permanent community in Tempe since the Hohokam. Crossing the river was done by ferry, and the service operator’s name was Charles T. Hayden. The area of Tempe actually became known as “Hayden’s Ferry” during these territorial times before it’s received its name. Darrell Duppa compared the Salt River Valley to the Vale of Tempe in Greece and suggested the city be named Tempe. The Maricopa and Phoenix rail road came to the area in 1887 making Tempe an economic hub for agricultural area, and the city was incorporated in 1894.

Tempe Beach Park is the central park in Tempe. This park is host to many festivals and concerts year round. Take a tour of Tempe Town Lake on one of the city’s boat rentals. You can cool off from the dry desert heat at the Big Surf Water Park. This park may be a little dated, but don’t underestimate the amount of fun you will have. The park is very affordable, friendly for all ages, has great reviews, and offers plenty of attractions.
